Sunmor Estates is a post-war American dream…literally. The neighborhood was built on the site of the former Palm Springs Airfield, used by the Army during World War II. From this utilitarian beginning, Sunmor grew into a development of smart, stylish vacation homes designed by legendary architects like William Krisel, Donald Wexler and Jack Meiselman.
Tour guests will experience the carefree desert lifestyle that drew the original homeowners here in the late 50s and early 60s. Street names like Livmor, Plaimor and Easmor reflect the relaxed lifestyle that Sunmor residents enjoyed then and still do today. The neighborhood itself was named for its’ proximity away from the mountains, allowing more sun to shine throughout the fall and winter seasons.
Most homes have been restored to the original designers’ intent with open floor plans, pitched ceilings and cinder block fireplaces. Exterior stone accent walls, open carports and breezeblock courtyards are surrounded by desert landscaping. It is a small, quiet, walkable neighborhood with a strong midcentury aesthetic.
Included on the tour is one of Liberace’s first homes in Palm Springs. Other homes will be making their debut in this 2020 tour as well as a selection of vintage cars.
Funds raised will support neighborhood improvements and expenses as well as a donation to the Neuro Vitality Center of Palm Springs, located in Sunmor.
