Modernism Week proudly welcomes back to Palm Springs American designer Todd Oldham. New York-based Todd Oldham will present a visually entertaining talk on the extraordinary career of one of his heroes, artist and designer Alexander Girard (1907-1993).
Launching his first clothing line in 1989, Todd is one of the most beloved and innovative designers working today. Originally a couture fashion designer, he gained international popularity as a mentor on Bravo’s Top Design, and as a commentator on MTV's House of Style. Oldham has collaborated on numerous architecture and design projects, including Charley Harper and Fishs Eddy, and designed his own line of furnishings for Target and La-Z-Boy.
In 2012, he co-authored the first major retrospective monograph, Alexander Girard for AMMO books, surveying every aspect of Girard’s career. Girard’s repertoire includes an incredible list of projects, including his bold and colorful textile designs for Herman Miller (1952-1975), where he created fabrics for the designs of George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames; his typographic designs for La Fonda del Sol restaurant (1960); his celebrated retail store Textiles and Objects (1961); his own Girard Foundation (1962) that houses his extensive, personal collection of folk art from around the world; and his complete branding design for Braniff International Airways (1965).
Following the presentation Todd will moderate a conversation with Aleishall Girard Maxon and Kori Girard, grandchildren of Alexander Girard and co-directors of the Girard Studio.
During Modernism Week, don't miss the exhibition at the Palm Springs Art Museum, ‘Alexander Girard: A Designer’s Universe’ which shows November 23, 2019 – March 1, 2020.
