Full Details

The Morse Residence, 1960, was originally designed as an Alexander tract home by Palmer and Krisel and in 1961 was purchased by Theodore and Claire Morse. With a desire to create one of the best known entertaining/party houses in the Vista Las Palmas neighborhood of Palm Springs, Claire turned to the designer for Hollywood’s elite, Beverly Hills architect Howard (Hal) Levitt, to enhance and embellish the house. The result is a fabulous collection of shifting angles, curves, glass walls and wood ceilings with terrazzo flowing from the sidewalk to the outdoors. Its most celebrated features are the sunken living room with white natural rock walls and dazzling adjacent bar with pocket windows that open to the most amazing swimming pool!

In 2013, Joan & Gary Gand, Chicago natives, acquired the house with the goal of preservation. The terrazzo was completely restored. They replaced and replicated doors, knobs, lighting, and reupholstered period built-in furniture, retaining the original authenticity. The home is decorated with vintage furniture and art, including incredible Alexander Girard pieces. This Hal Levitt masterpiece is now a designated Palm Springs Class One Historic Site and received the Palm Springs Modern Committee’s 2018 Residential Preservation Award. Funds raised from this tour benefit the PS ModCom Educational programs.

The Palm Springs Modern Committee (PS ModCom) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation and preservation of Desert Modern architecture and design. We accomplish this through education, advocacy for threatened buildings, promotion of heritage tourism, and the celebration of successes in preservation and adaptive reuse. A Sunset Cocktail Reception with cocktails and canapés is available as the last tour of the day.

$40, $125 for Sunset Cocktail Reception
