Come to the Palm Springs Public Library after hours to enjoy an evening with authors Alan Hess and Michael Stern as they discuss their latest book Hollywood Modern: Houses of the Stars.  This book and their presentation explores the intersection between celebrity and high design. Hess and Stern selected 24 Modern houses from the Silent Era to today belonging to legends like Groucho Marx, Gary Cooper, Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra, Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Charlton Heston, and Marilyn Monroe. Architects represented include Richard Neutra, Frank Lloyd Wright, John Lautner, and Paul R. Williams. Some of these houses projected the glamorous public persona of a great star; some were private hideaways from the pressures of stardom. All are excellent Modern architecture, including three in Palm Springs! See photos and hear the stories behind these homes. Books will be for sale at the event and a book signing will follow the lecture. Alan Hess is a nationally recognized architect, author, historian and critic. He writes a very informative architectural blog as well as being the architecture critic for the San Jose Mercury News. Michael Stern curated the landmark exhibition "Julius Shulman: Palm Springs," which formed the basis of his book, with Alan Hess, Julius Shulman: Palm Springs, (Rizzoli, 2008). He is a sought after guide for exclusive home tours of Palm Springs.

Presented by and proceeds to benefit the Friends of the Palm Springs Library, a non-profit organization established in 1971 that supports the Library through grants for events and equipment and builds awareness within the community for the Library and its functions.
