Full Details

"Crisp white exteriors, ample breeze block and shadow block, expansive green lawns and dramatic midcentury rooflines are the hallmarks of Palmer & Krisel’s Canyon View Estates. It is a truly iconic example of “leisure lifestyle” architecture from the 1960s. Developed by Roy Fey in six phases between 1962 and 1966, this was the first condominium community built in Palm Springs.

Designed by noted midcentury architects William Krisel and Dan Palmer, the units feature single- and double-gabled roofs with triangular clerestory windows that let in desert light and mountain vistas. All utilities were buried so as not to interfere with views of the surrounding mountains.

An original advertisement from 1965 bragged of “Spacious & Fully Carpeted” living areas and proclaimed the neighborhood “Prestige Homes for Prestige People.” As a co-operative community, Canyon View Estates offered seasonal desert dwellers the comfort of a private home with the ease and luxury of a hotel—no yard to mow, no pool to clean!

Eight homes are on tour, including one in original condition and another featured in HGTV Magazine. Thoughtful renovations that update and honor midcentury style are evident throughout.

Tour participants will receive a complimentary copy of “Palm Springs: The Architecture of Desert Leisure” by local expert and author Erik Rosenow, published by the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation with beautiful photos and a fascinating history of resort living in the 1950s and 60s.

Proceeds from this tour will be used for community improvements, such as investment in the architectural integrity and historical character of Canyon View Estates, as well as sustainable landscaping upgrades to reduce water usage."
