Full Details

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of construction, The 500 West is an early California condominium community.  Designed by architect Herbert Burns, who left his mark on the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs and specifically, The Historic Tennis Club Neighborhood. His projects include: The 400 West, The Desert Hills, The Holiday House, The Hideaway, The Orbit In, along with single-family homes. Writing about Burns, biographer Steven Keylon  explains, "Herbert Burns developed a very distinctive design aesthetic, rooted in a more decorative version of Modernism, the Late Moderne style…It is important though to understand the Late Moderne style to appreciate the Herbert Burns look.  Like the designer himself, his architecture had warmth, practicality, vitality, and even a sense of humor.”

The 500 West was his final project. Consisting of a group of 10 luxury condominiums, and tucked below the San Jacinto mountains, the design centers around an L-shaped pool and spa. The 500 West includes common motifs of the Late Moderne and highlights Burns’ signature features including stone walls, deep overhangs, horizontal eaves, and private patios spaces. The homes open during the tour have been remodeled to complement the original design and construction. Unit #8 was built specifically for his friend and business partner Ronald K. Miller and features many custom touches along with bookmarked travertine walls and a terrazzo patio.

Palm Springs Preservation Foundation board member Steven Keylon will be on site to discuss Burns’ work and influence and sign copies of his book, The Design of Herbert W. Burns, detailing the architect’s life. The book will be for sale during the tour. Proceeds from this tour will support the preservation and restoration of this historic property.
