Sunrise Lanai is a cross between a Polynesian Tiki hut and a Swiss chalet. Back by popular demand, the crazy-but-cute condos at Sunrise Lanai are a prime example of Palm Springs Swiss Miss design. The creation of noted midcentury architect and designer Charles DuBois, who introduced the style in the famous Swiss Miss homes of the city’s Las Palmas neighborhood. They’re a must-see for fans of whimsical midcentury design.
Grand A-framed roofs worthy of any alpine village dominate inner courtyards of pools, gardens and soaring palms. The shaded poolside lanai is the central feature for which the community was named. Lanais were in vogue during the 1950s and 1960s – not just for shade but also as a focus for socializing around the pool. It was all about sun and fun, so the lanai fit the bill perfectly.
“A miracle in the desert” as proclaimed by its builders, the complex first opened in 1961; development continued until 1963. A down payment of $160 secured a two-bedroom unit with private, walled ‘sun dens’ off both bedrooms.
This tour features several condos, sympathetically restored and decorated. Proceeds will be used to restore our tiki apexes and other architectural elements that were removed in the 1990s.
