Come explore unique architectural works from Palm Springs’ midcentury masters, including Albert Frey, William Cody, Hal Whittemore, Lawrence Lapham, Michael Black and Laszlo Sandor. Hidden in plain sight, the holy houses (churches) of Palm Springs designed in the 50s, 60s, and 70s illustrate how architects translated the variety of diverse and growing congregations into sometimes subtle and sometimes dramatic sacred places. Last year’s 6-site “Sacred Places” tour was featured in Wallpaper* and Space International Design on-line magazines, and has been redesigned to include even more sites for 2019. On the 2-hour BUS tour, your guide will share some history of Palm Springs and it’s famed architects. In addition to the church exteriors, at least 4 of the sites will be welcoming tour-goers inside to explore their specific history and architecture in more detail. From the sweeping curves and corners of Cody-designed St. Theresa Catholic Church to the geometric patterns of concrete block and stained glass at the Palm Springs First Baptist Church, you will see how architects helped inspire the sacred spaces where the likes of Eisenhower, Sinatra, and even Elvis Presley worshiped. If the bus tour is sold out, please check back as additional bus tour times might be added. Also, for those who wish to drive themselves or bike the tour, a self-guided tour map and brochure of sites is available for $30. The self-guided tour map is listed as a separate event on-line and will also be available the morning of the event at the check in location.
