On tour for only the second time, Pompeii de Las Palmas offers visitors an experience that might best be described as “other-worldly.” On May 1, 2015, this nine-unit Roman Revival-style condo complex became Palm Springs’ fourth Class-One Historic District. In 1964, America’s fascination with all things Italian was at its peak. From Fellini to Frank Sinatra, films, songs, and sleek Italian silk suits were all the rage. Upwardly mobile Americans sought style and sophistication in their surroundings; and smart developers carefully gauged the pulse of the Zeitgeist and planned accordingly. Pompeii de Las Palmas began construction in 1964. Organized into three separate buildings, this midcentury complex combines classic Roman details with elements of Hollywood Regency design. Once you pass through the oversized entry portal, you enter an enclosed space where the outside world is only evidenced by swaying palm trees and the towering San Jacinto Mountains. Visitors will be able to stroll the central “Main Street” of the complex and see how the interiors of some units have been reinvented by 21st Century modernists. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a brief talk on the history of the complex and how it navigated the Class-One Historic designation process in Palm Springs. Vintage Fashion of the 1964 era will be incorporated into our tour.
