As the mecca of Modernism you can rely on Palm Springs to have lots of cool buildings to "ooh and ahh" over. So it is no surprise that our fire stations are midcentury cool too. The City of Palm Springs is pleased to invite Modernism Week Fall Preview attendees to tour the recently restored and expanded Fire Station # 4, Hugh M. Kaptur AIA, 1971. Mr. Kaptur was commissioned to design a building that would fit comfortably with the surrounding single-family residences of the Twin Palms and Indian Canyon neighborhoods. When the building was completed, The Desert Sun declared it “the pride of the city”. The recent restoration and expansion of the building brought the original architect, Hugh M. Kaptur to consult with project architect, Maria Song AIA to assure the storied fire station maintained a residential scale. The architect’s collaboration has resulted in a stunning and seamless coming together of architecture and function. This open house event will allow for attendees to tour the fire station, glimpse behind the scenes areas, meet with available personnel and the architects, Hugh M. Kaptur and Maria Song who will be on hand for a casual meet and greet.
