Full Details

Join us for a special sunset party and home tour at one of the most spectacular and oldest hillside homes in Thunderbird Heights located in Rancho Mirage. This is a rare opportunity to visit ‘White Shadows,’ designed in 1957 by Henry Eggers of Eggers & Wilkman (previously a partner with Gordon Kaufmann). ‘White Shadows’ has never before opened to the public and Modernism Week is delighted to offer it to you first.

Legendary designer T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings was responsible for the sumptuous, Moroccan Modern interiors, still very much in evidence today. Such was the home’s splendor that, upon completion, it was the subject of a 22-page feature in House Beautiful magazine, photographed by Maynard Parker, where it was described as a “pearl white palace.” The original owner was Thomas B. Davis who, as heir to the Weyerhaeuser lumber fortune, spared no expense.

Guests will be able to tour the house and take in the sunset views while mingling poolside and enjoying splendid cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The party will also mark the official launch of the first comprehensive book on Rancho Mirage architecture, Mod Mirage, written by Melissa Riche, photography by Jim Riche, foreword by Brad Dunning; published by Gibbs Smith. ‘White Shadows’ is one of many homes featured in the book and Melissa Riche will make a short presentation on the history of the home and will sign books, which will be available for purchase at the event.

Modernism Week and Preservation Mirage are grateful to the owners for opening their home. A portion of proceeds from this event will go to the recently formed non-profit group, Preservation Mirage, whose mission is to raise awareness of important architecture in Rancho Mirage and advocate for its preservation.

Generously sponsored by Jake’s Palm Springs and Pol Roger Champagne.
